How to see the world as a combination of shapes

Posted by Bryan Dunn on

Although seeing the world as a combination of shapes can be somewhat difficult, it is a really useful approach for any photographer. When you are able to figure out the outer world as a set of shapes, capturing what you see becomes pretty easier.

Here’s how to do it.
You should select about five photos and get their hardcopies. You should then get a separate piece of paper and start drawing the shapes you see in the first hardcopy. To make it easier, you can consider using a transparent piece of paper, place it on one of the images and start drawing the shapes you see. Then, you must continue this with the other images as well. You can make it a habit and continue for several days.

Then, go to your window and look at the surrounding to identify the shapes. Gradually, you will be able to see most of the scenes as shapes.
